Kaka the turtle watched from under a big, green fern. The annual
Forest Race was about to begin! Rabbits stretched their long legs. Squirrels chattered
excitedly, flicking their bushy tails. Kaka sighed a tiny turtle sigh. "I'm too slow to
ever win," he whispered to a ladybug crawling on his shell.
Page 2
The starting whistle blew with a loud TOOT! A flurry of fur and
feathers zipped past Kaka. WHOOSH! went the rabbits. ZING! went the squirrels. Soon,
Kaka was all alone on the path, with just a cloud of dust for company. He took a slow,
steady step, and then another.

As he rounded a bend by the babbling brook, Kaka saw Grandpa
Tortoise resting under a mushroom. "Why the long face, little one?" Grandpa Tortoise
asked, his voice slow and kind like dripping honey. "The race is too fast for me," Kaka
mumbled, looking at his feet.
Page 4
Grandpa Tortoise chuckled softly. "Ah, but the secret of the race
isn't just about speed," he said, tapping his own sturdy shell. "It's about the steady
step. The one that keeps going, even when it's slow. Just focus on your own path, one
step at a time."
Page 5
One steady step at a time? Kaka thought about it. He looked down
the long, winding path. It didn't seem so scary when he thought of it as just a lot of
single steps. "Okay," he said, feeling a little braver. "One step... then another."
Page 6
He plodded on, past a field of bright yellow buttercups. And what
did he see? Barnaby Rabbit, fast asleep under a shady tree! Barnaby was so sure he would
win, he decided to take a nap. Kaka didn't stop. He just kept going. Step. Plod. Step.
Page 7
A little later, he heard a commotion. The squirrels were
chattering and pointing in different directions, arguing over which shortcut was
quicker. They were so busy arguing, they didn't even notice Kaka as he plodded right
past them on the main path.
Page 8
Kaka's little legs were getting tired, but he remembered Grandpa
Tortoise's words. "Steady step, steady step," he whispered to himself. He watched a
butterfly flutter by and smelled a sweet flower, but he never stopped moving forward.
Page 9
And then... he saw it! A bright red ribbon stretched between two
flowerpots. The finish line! And nobody was there. With a final, tired push, Kaka
plodded across the line. He had done it!
Page 10
Just then, Barnaby Rabbit woke up and zoomed to the finish,
followed by the bickering squirrels. They all stared in shock. Kaka, the slow turtle,
was the winner! Kaka smiled. He had learned the secret of the race: it's not always the
fastest who wins, but the one who keeps on going.
